What to expect
So, you're all registered but still have no idea what the hell BarCamp is or what's going to happen when you walk through the doors on Saturday? Well, we're here to help. Here's a quick run-down on what to expect at BarCampCHS.
- TIME REMINDER: registration, 8am-9am (ground floor)
- Upon arriving, you'll want to hit the registration table, check-in and grab your "schwag bag" which will contain your badge, t-shirt and other goodies. You'll likely be in photos/videos throughout the day, so please wear the shirt!
- Check out the sponsor tables in the hallway - we couldn't have done it without them, so please say "hi" (and "thanks!")
- Stop by the Visual Arts Show & Tell room where you'll find some amazing artists throughout the day. They're there for you, to answer questions, show you techniques, swap business cards, and talk about various topics. There no schedule for this room, so feel free to wander in and out.
- Head upstairs to the cafe and grab some coffee, muffins and snacks. You'll have some time to meet other BarCampers before we start the session pitches. Depending on how much time you have, walk around and explore the spaces, but please make it downstairs to the opening remarks at 9am!
- TIME REMINDER: opening remarks & session pitches, 9am-9:30am (ground floor)
- The planners will kick things off by welcoming everyone to the first ever BarCamp in the state of South Carolina!
- We'll then do session pitches which are short (we're talking 30 seconds or so!) This is just an opportunity to tell the crowd what you're presenting on. We'll be writing these down as you give your pitch, then we'll break and the planners will tally and sort out what goes where - this is how the sessions are scheduled!
- Once we've got sessions assigned to locations and times, BarCamp begins in earnest. Go learn stuff!
- TIME REMINDER: first round of sessions start, 10am (second floor)
- Sessions are 45 minutes, with 15 minutes padding for stuff like Q&A, coffee/snack break, checking the session boad, etc.
- SESSIONS - 10am-11am
- SESSIONS - 11am-noon
- TIME REMINDER: lunch @ noon (ground floor)
- We don't learn as well on an empty stomach, and we don't want you to have to run off to get food, so we got sponsors to pay for lunch from The Barbeque Joint in Park Circle.
- TIME REMINDER: Afternoon session pitches while we enjoy lunch and socialize at 1pm (ground floor)
- SESSIONS - 2pm-3pm
- SESSIONS - 3pm-4pm
- SESSIONS - 4pm-5pm
- SESSIONS - 5pm-6pm
- Remember, this is an unconference, so take pictures, shoot video, Tweet it, blog it, sketch it on paper - the main thing here is SHARE IT.
- Confused? Troubled? Lost? Whatever your concerns, find an organizer/volunteer and tell us - we're the people wearing the black shirts.
- Look around, relax and enjoy. You may feel a little unsteady at first not knowing what's going to happen next, but BarCamp veterans will tell you that you'll be surprised at how groups start to self-organize and how you'll wind up in impromptu discussions with some amazing folks. Staying loose and willing to learn/share new things will keep you ready and prepared for the next 'thing.'
We're excited to be introducing BarCamp to the Lowcountry, but we're even more excited about making this experience a good one for all 250 of our participants. So if you need something, speak up!
See you on tomorrow!
