Brainstorm on possible session topics
I thought we could start up a thread and list possible topics that could make for interesting sessions during BarCamp. Here's some of my thoughts - Cal made a similar blog post here that is worth reading as well.
- DVR basics, DVR hacks - ReplayTV, TiVo, MythTV, Freevo, LinuxMCE, SageTV, Orb, etc.
- Google apps for non-profits, businesses
- Android (general, Android (apps)
- iPhone apps
- Crowdsourcing
- Twitter API
- Digital photography tools - Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, etc.
- Mac, Snow Leopard
- Gadgets
- Little geeks (kids in tech)
- Network security
- Local government use of social media/networks
- Future of journalism
- Writing 101
- Video editing basics
- Photography - studio lighting on a budget
- Homebrewing
- Wordpress theming
- Photography - creative lighting (strobist)

how does scheduling work? There are several sessions I would like to attend. Also is there a breakdown for what will be BFF or workshop versus presentation-ish?
People show up the morning of and sign up for a session room and time slot, then you can decide on what you'd like to attend. If people are flexible, you can probably talk them into moving a session forward/back by a time slot.
There's really no breakdown on BoF/workshop/session - it all depends on those that are leading it or are interested in it. We have a ton of room, so there shouldn't be any problem with running out of room, so if a BoF appears to be too large for one of the smaller rooms, we can certainly move it somewhere else.
The only think that is basically set is the ground floor 3,000+ sqft room, which will be used for an open workshop for visual arts. Basically you can come in at any time, walk around and participate if you see something that interests you.
We're talking about putting together a video that explains it all in greater detail.

Wow. I didn't know about this either. Chrys: is there any chance we could get something about this up on the main site so people know about it? I'd like to see what the community has to offer, but I'm not sure any of the visual artists who are attending will know about it!
Sorry, was meaning to put together a page that describes this in greater detail but just haven't had the time. Eugene was kind enough to help out with a blog post about it here, but yes, we basically have a large room that we can make into a "Visual Arts Open Workshops" where people can be setup to show various interactive sessions with photography, video, etc. If you have ideas on how we can refine the idea, please please share them - we need the help!

Whoa, what is this? I haven't heard anything about this. What kind of space does each artist get? What kind of visual arts need representing? I'm going to have to go comb this site now, to see where else this is mentioned...
Well, I have a few that I would like to see.
- Troubleshooting a network.
- How to be a geek 101
- Linux, When is it better then Windows?
- How to find a computer related job.
- PROFIT! on the internet, for very little work.
- How to explain computers, to non-computer people.
- How to NOT break your rockband drumset after a month.
- If you did break your drumset, how to fix it.
- How to start learning how to program.
I can think of more, but they get somewhat overlapping with the subject matter.
Oh, and in what format can our presentations be if we get chosen? Powerpoint? AVI? Whiteboard? Smartboard? Video? (some examples or something would be nice, I have never been to one of these before.)
an "angry mans guide to ruby" would be funny, says someone who is not me.
Hey Chrys, I know Steve is presenting a basic Linux class; however, I bet if we could get him to do an XBox Mod workshop it would go over well. He is always getting asked about them and does an awesome job. No bias on my part right :)
Also, I see you mention maybe a Writing 101 workshop; what did you have in mind on this? Anything in particular?
Cool, sign him up! I just so happen to have an XBox that he could use to demo on :)
Hate to talk about him 3rd party (lol), but he said the one thing he would need is a video camera and monitor that would show the audience what he is doing because it is such a small area. If this is not possible, I wonder if he could video tape the TSOP to the Xbox and then do the rest of the class on how the Xbox works once everything is done?

I can present "How to be a Geek 101" if that is a session someone may be interested in?
