HamCamp

Presenter:
Eugene Mah

Ham (amateur) radio has a strong tradition of mentoring, or "Elmer-ing" in ham-speak. If enough hams and ham-wannabes can be gathered, how about having a mini-camp to talk about ham radio topics of interest to us and probably others? There could be discussions on any and all aspects of ham radio, demonstrations, and maybe demonstrate a bit of radio to other BarCampers.

About the Speaker:

Eugene Mah is a medical physicist and a relatively newly licensed ham radio person (call sign KK4JRP). He currently holds a General amateur radio license and is hoping to have his Amateur Extra license by the time BarcampCHS 4 rolls around.

Comments

Just a few thoughts as I continue to ruminate on the idea

The idea of the HamCamp is to start with a mini-camp within BarCampCHS. Sessions and presentations should be short (maybe 15-20 minutes) so that a few can be fit into each BarCampCHS block. They can be introductory for new hams/wannabes or cover more advanced topics

  • Good radio conduct
  • Antenna anatomy
  • Assembling a ham shack
  • Licensing/regulations
  • Radio bands
  • Digital radio modes
  • CW (Morse code)
  • Echolink/Winlink/IRLP
  • Contesting

There can be outdoor sessions and demonstrations which obviously won't be constrained by BarCampCHS scheduling.

  • Radio demonstrations
  • Antenna building

Contesting would be a great topic as well.
