Alternative Illustration Programs: Pixelmator, Gimp, Inkscape, and others

Proposal:
I would like someone to present on this topic.

Description:

I'm having a tough time transitioning from Adobe products like Photoshop and Illustrator into Gimp and Inkscape. I'd love to learn some tips and tricks to help the process, or even if there are other programs out there that are more powerful (and if not free, worth the money). For example, Pixelmator looks great on the website, but is it $59 worth of great?

Why not alternative programs in general?  There are a lot of free or nearly-free alternatives in comparison to the pro apps.  Just a thought... what do others think?

If you do too broad of a topic, you risk it turning into a list of programs. To really delve into a "This is how you use Gimp to replace 80% Photoshop" thing, you need time. A narrow focus can provide that time.

Sam: Can you be more specific about what you are looking for?
